The Campus Code

Caught their Attention

In 2008 I designed, created and implemented a puzzle at the University of the West of England. I hid a silver ring somewhere on the campus, wrote a series of puzzled that needed to be solved to find location of said ring, slapped up a LOT of posters of the puzzle, issues press releases with the student paper and with the local newspaper the Evening Post and waited to see what happened.

You can download the Campus Code (430.25 KB) here.

Noticeably, my website got an obscene amount of hits, then the ‘is this right?’ emails started coming in. After 12 months I stopped promoting it as the ring has still not been found. One person solved most of it, but never took it further. Far as I know it is still there, complete with my contact details to get hold of me.

So, in preparation for the new year, and hopefully a new simpler puzzle, I have included the original puzzle and the solution that leads to the ring.

What the Puzzle is

The puzzle comes as a PDF of a noticeboard, complete with notices. Use this to solve the puzzles contained in the PDF and this will show you the location of the ring.

How the Puzzle Works

There are 10 smaller puzzles that need to be solved. Once solved, there is one more meta-puzzle to solve which reveals the EXACT LOCATION to where the ring is. If you really want to read the solution, you can download it here: Campus Code Solution (13.07 KB)

I have done another two puzzles for different groups of people since then and have a couple more in the pipeline, but this one is still my favourite. If you have any questions about my technique, puzzles in general or even want to discuss a puzzle to suit your needs, give me a shout@duncanmckean.co.uk

  1. at last! i can sleep!
i got about 3 of the precepts and 2 of the prose, but would never have gotten all of it. well done sir! when will we be expecting the next? and will it be as hard as this one?

  2. You’re a very creative man. I’d love to organize something like this and cause the students to turn the whole campus upside down trying to look for it hahaha…

  3. I was going to do something like this long time ago as a way to impress a girl. I was going to hide a beautiful gift at Sam’s club, the store where she were working. I planned to hide some puzzles around the big store and just give her the first one to start the game. The puzzles were easy to do, so she could do them all in less than 1 hour. At the end, she was going to realize that the gift was very close to the first location. I think she was going to like it a lot because that’s something different, and also for the gift.

It would be nice to do what you did, but with something more expensive like an mp3 player or maybe a notebook. In that way there is going to be more people fighting for the gift. jajaja.

Also, including your website again is a great idea. You could write a post talking about some instructions, to give some clues, etc. In that way the players are going to have a place where to post comments and ask questions.

This is great idea hope you do it again and post the results.

    GOD bless…
