I am lucky to be the Events Coordinator for this year’s Bristol Design Festival. Here’s Neil, the Director of the BDF to tell you about the 2008 event:

Our main event will take place between 13th and 17th of June at The Old Fire Station in the centre of Bristol.  We have 10,000 sq feet of exhibition space in this awesome venue which we hope to fill with about 150 designers from the local area.

As well as the usual range of exciting and inspirational design work on show, a new addition to this year’s festival will be a programme of inspiring and educational seminars and workshops taking place in the main venue and across Bristol.  Exact details will be confirmed at a later date.

Our aim this year is to collaborate with existing creative events in the city, and encourage people to set up their own independent events under the Bristol Design Festival umbrella.  For example we are working in partnership with Bristol City Council to organise an Eco-Design Exhibition at the CREATE CENTRE from the 23rd of June.

You will all be pleased to know that due to its great success last year we are running the Grafikea Competition for a second time with a top prize of £250!  The same simple rules still apply, but for more information on how to enter, please visit the website.

This year, prizes will be awarded on the night to designers in several different categories, including: an Eco-Design Award, New Entrepreneur Award and several Best Of categories. Prizes so far will include free office space, 1 year’s personal mentoring from an award winning design entrepreneur, cash, designer products and of course the much sought after, locally designed Bristol Design Festival trophies.

As well as being under the scrutiny of several judges from the professional design community, this year the general public will have their say too!  In collaboration with Mobile Pie, visitors to the show will now be able to vote for their favourite designers by txt message.  The Public Choice award will be presented on the closing night of the festival.

The guys at smarterproducts.co.uk are once again supporting the event, so please check out their website.  The whole event will be filmed and then released as a short documentary through local DVD Magazine, 5 on 1 and we have teamed up with Business Link to offer free business advice to all of our exhibitors.

Offers of support are coming through all the time, but we still need lots more.  So if you would like to support the event in anyway, either financially or in-kind, please, please get in touch.

So, If you want to exhibit, sponsor, volunteer, include your own independent show as part of the festival, run a workshop or speak at a seminar please check out the new website for more info or get in touch and we would be only happy to help.
